Part of efforts to ensure equitable distribution and availability
of petroleum product in the country, the Pipelines and Products
Marketing Company (PPMC) have rejuvenated its strategic Benin Depot
which was moribund for over seven (7) years.
The depot which was recommissioned by the Minister of Petroleum
Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke on Thursday, was first
commissioned in 1979 with the capacity to hold 121,720,000 litres of
petroleum products.
The depot which is located along the Benin-Agbor highway, a few miles
outside the Edo State capital, has 9 loading decks for trucks and its
19 storage tanks to hold petrol, kerosene and gas oil.
While recommissioning the depot, Alison-Madueke said the revamping
was part of the President Goodluck Jonathan administration's resolve to
revamp the entire oil sector especially the downstream segment.
The Minister further assured that all the moribund depots would be
reactivated to strengthen the distribution capacity of the PPMC.
While thanking the Minister and the Federal Government for revamping
the all-important deport, Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole
assured the Minister that his administration as well as Edo State
residents would police the over 80 km pipelines linking the depot to the
Warri refinery to ensure that fuel thieves do not target them again.
Also speaking at the recommissioning, the Group Managing Director of
the NNPC, Mr. Andrew Yakubu reassured that all 21 depots nationwide
would operate at full capacity "very soon."
