I/Coast’s Kalou pays Nigeria’s Mikel $5,000 in bet


According to football sources on Monday Kalou delivered on his promise of giving Mikel should Nigeria beat Ivory Coast in Sunday’s game which the Super Eagles won 2-1 to book a semifinal spot against Mali on Wednesday.
“By virtue of the victory of the Super Eagles, I admit that Obi Mikel has won the bet and true to my word, I have given him what’s due to him” Kalou was quoted saying by a football source on futaa.com.
He now plays for France’s Ligue 1 club Lille said acknowledged that although the Elephants were overwhelming favourites going into the game, they were for most part of the match outplayed by Mikel and the rest of the Nigeria side.
Kalou a former teammate of Mikel at Chelsea was substituted midway through the game with Max Gradel replacing him.
1992 champions, the star-studded Ivory Coast side have for five consecutive continental tournaments regarded as favourites to win the title.
They were edged on penalties in 2012 by eventual winners Zambia who failed to make the quarterfinal cut in defense of their title, becoming the first defending champions to fail to reach the second round in defense of their crown since Algeria in 1992 after triumphing on home soil two years earlier.
